Why To Teach English In Korea

The author currently lives and teaches in Seoul. Prior to that, he worked at a corporate job and hated it. His goal is to travel to all seven continents. The following article entails some of his experiences. So from here on out, here is Ryan.

Two Reasons Why you should Teach English in South Korea: Actually, there are a myriad of reasons why you should teach in South Korea. But my purpose is not to bore you, so here are just two of them.

The first reason: Travel and Culture

Wen you sign your contract, the Korean government pays you not only a monthly salary, but also they pay for your flight, housing, and visa expenses. Not many countries offer this sweet of a package to native English speakers. In 2010, the Korean branch of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education paid 1,600,000 Korean Won for teachers to travel to Korea. I pay no rent for my apartment. Also, on my way out, I get an exit allowance which willmore than pay for my flight back to the states. You can't go wrong with free rent! I think that if you like to travel, than doing one year in Korea is a good way to do that. Consider your friends for a minute. Do a lot of the have experience with international travel? I bet it is a small percent. So how many people do you know that have been to Korea? Most likelt, it is a small small percentage. As a matter of fact, most foreigners are either in the military or teachers. So, when thought about that way, it's a pretty unique experience and opportunity. I think Korea does not get the same level of respect and recognition as the likes of other Asian countries like China and Japan. South Korea certainly doesn't get the respect and recognition it deserves from countries like the United States. Korea actually has a trillion dollar economy!

To go one step further, living there for a whole year allows you to immerse yourself in a foreign culture that is different from your own--provided you are reading this and are not Korean. In essence, you just get all kinds of experiences. For example, you get to experience new food and people who you will never see elsewhere around the world. Isn't that amazing! You learn the culture, but almost more importantly, you learn a lot about yourself as well. I bet that you learn more overall, teaching in Korea, than you would learn in your boring desk job. Finally, in my contract, I got a 21 calendar day vacation, plus sick days, plus all national holidays off. Please note that everyone's contracts are different, however.

The Second Reason: Unforgettable Memories.

Tying into that, the experience itself is unbelievable. Teaching English in South Korea has been one of my favorite memories of all time and something I will never forget. I am part of public school life in South Korea. How rad is that!? I get to witness the kids grow and get better at English and at life. I meet and talk to people from all around the globe. For example, I have buddies from Canada, South Africa, Australia, and more! I have been able to travel and to see some amazing places like Angkor Wat in Cambodia and the Great Wall of China. I've also learned a good deal of Korean culture and language. I have been to the demilitarized zone! Korea is one of the most technologically developed countries!
