Nike's impact on football boots
Nike is the world's leading supplier of sports footwear and apparel as well as sports equipment. Founded in 1964, it has climbed the sports ladder and now sponsors many high profile athletes and sports teams around the world. Nike sells an assortment of products such as shoes and apparels for several sports such as football, basketball, running, tennis, athletics, golf, and many more. They are famous for their football boots and have several ranges such as Nike Mercurial Vapor and Nike Total 90.
Nike Mercurial Vapor
These boots are well known for being lightweight and are suitable for players who rely on speed for their performance such as wingers or strikers. There are currently seven versions of this football boot and they are available in with soft ground or firm ground versions. The origins of the Vapor came from 1998 with Nike Air Mercurial boots, which were made from synthetic materials. The original Vapor however was produced in 2002, and at that time was the lightest boot on the market. The Mercurial Vapor II was released in 2004, MV III in 2006, MVIV in 2007 and Mercurial Vapor V in 2009. In addition, the Mercurial Vapor Superfly line was launched in 2009. In 2010, Mercurial Vapor VI and Mercurial Vapor Superfly II were released. A Mercurial Superfly II Elite series was also released in this year to commemorate the 2010 World Cup. The latest Mercurial Vapor VII and Mercurial Vapor Superfly III were launched in March 2011. A specific boot – the CR Mercurial Vapor Superfly III was released which was worn exclusively by Cristiano Ronaldo. Players such as Drogba, Ronaldo and Henry have worn the Mercurial Vapor line.
Nike Total 90 –T90
This brand was released in 2000, and refers to the 90 minutes of game time in a football match. In 2007, Nike introduced T90 Laser which was claimed to improve accuracy, swerve and power. These boots were worn by star players such as Rooney, Torres, Cannavaro, and Sneijder. In 2008, T90 Laser II was introduced which reduced the exposure of laces. Together with the Laser line, there have been other T90 releases such as Air Zoom I, II and III and T90 Supremacy. The most recent release is the T90 Laser III. This is the most complex boot ever released and has silicon pods that are designed to improve the strike zone as well as TPU fins that are designed to enhance touch and control.
